Music at Reignhead Primary School
Intent
At Reignhead, we believe in the power of music to change lives and aim to foster a lifelong love of music for all our children. From EYFS to Year 6, we aim to engage all children in deep musical learning which gives opportunities to listen, play, perform and create music using their voices and a range of instruments. Through our clearly sequenced curriculum, we ensure that children progress musically, becoming increasingly able to listen with discrimination and perform with awareness of the dimensions of music – pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and musical notation. Children will appreciate a wide variety of music and begin to appraise a range of musical genres.
We recognise that music can and should play an integral role in helping children to feel part of a community, therefore we provide opportunities for all children to perform music both in class and to an audience with an increasing awareness of others. All children learn to play a musical instrument during their time at Reignhead which includes being able to follow musical notation.

Implementation
The Scheme of Work ‘Sparkyard’ is used for all children from Year 1 to Year 6. This allows for a clear progression of skills and knowledge in line with our identified key concepts. In EYFS, materials from Sparkyard are also used to support the ELG ‘Being Imaginative and Expressive’; by the end of the Foundation Stage children are able to ‘Sing a range of well-known nursery rhymes and songs; perform songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and (when appropriate) try to move in time with music.’
There are regular opportunities for further enrichment including:
Opportunities to perform (Nursery to Year 6)
Singing Assemblies (Year 1 to Year 6)
Rocksteady Music Lessons (Year 1 to Year 6)
Wider Opportunities – brass (Year 5)
Young Voices Choir (Year 3 to Year 6)
Impact
Children at Reignhead are engaged and excited by our music curriculum. The skills that they are taught equip them with a range of skills to enable them to appreciate music throughout their lives. Children become confident performers, composers and listeners, who are able to express themselves musically at school and beyond. Children show an appreciation and respect for a range of music from a variety of genres across a variety of generations. Finally, children progress throughout the music curriculum which enables them to meet the expectations outlined at the end of each key stage for the national curriculum.
