Art and Design
Intent
We are passionate about Art and Design at Reignhead Primary School! It is our belief that every child has the right to develop their creativity through a rich, high quality Art and Design curriculum. Our intention is to inspire curiosity in pupils and equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment – finding their own artistic style as they journey through the school.
Aims
Through our Art and Design curriculum, our aim is that each child will:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Implementation
The foundation of our Art and Design curriculum is taken directly from the National Curriculum.
Throughout their school journey, from EYFS to Year 6, each child builds upon the elements of Art and Design taught (eg. shape, texture, pattern, line, shade) using a variety of different media and techniques in drawing, painting, printing, collage, 3D design and textiles. They develop fluency in observational sketching and colour mixing skills. Children learn about portrait, landscape, still life and other ways that elements can be arranged. All children, from Years 1 to 6, use sketchbooks to document their learning and creative journeys. Their own personal sketchbook reflects their study and skills whilst allowing them to annotate their own ideas, take risks and develop their own individuality.
The children are taught Art and Design in half term blocks, which are often linked to the half term history or geography topic. Art and Design is alternated half-termly with Design and Technology. There is a two yearly broad and diverse curriculum which spirals, allowing for skills and concepts to be developed and built upon with a clear progression.
Wider Impact
Here, at Reignhead Primary School, children’s Art and Design journeys are celebrated around school on display. Each year, we hold a school art gallery evening celebrating the children’s end of year Art and Design learning.
The study of Art and Design at Reignhead Primary School will not only equip our children with a strong foundation of skills and understanding but also give them a love of the subject and the confidence to further explore their creativity in their life journey beyond Reignhead Primary School.
